Creative Commons in Action

This scenario was inspired by a project I have been wanting to do for a couple of years and have not yet tried. The scenario involves students learning the various skills involved in the creative process. First, students are encouraged to explore various hip-hop/rap music. Students will analyze the themes explored and how they are developed through the use of language, specifically literary devices. Then, students are to select a song which they would like to create new lyrics for. These songs must have the appropriate copyright licenses that enable them to use the music as a backdrop for their own poetry. Following this, students will emulate a rap battle and record this for sharing. During this process, students are learning to give credit to the original musician. In addition, students are learning the importance of academic honesty.
