The SAMR model plays a vital role in library technology because it encourages meaningful implementation of technology in schools. When introducing new technology in the library/classroom, it is important to consider the 4 stages of the SAMR model. Is the technology being used to enhance current tasks/assignments or is it being used to transform learning? Teacher-librarians must determine the value of the new technology based on it’s purpose .
I believe the implementation of new technology should transform learning. With the “redefinition stage” students are “creating tasks that were once unimaginable,” (Robertson 00:01:07-00:01:15). The creation of new tasks involves critical thinking, reflecting and promoting creativity. All these aspects lie at the heart of a library learning commons (LLC) and building life-long learners.
I was first introduced to the SAMR model just as in-class instruction was suspended. At this point, multiple tech tools were being shared by tech support staff. When evaluating the use of the tech tool, I asked myself which of the SAMR stages was this piece of technology aligning with. If it transformed learning, I thought about how it could be used in my class.
Now, stepping into the role of a teacher librarian, I will be a point of reference for new technology in my school. Using the SAMR to evaluate new digital tools will help me determine which I would like to explore with the students and staff and which I would pass on. In sum, I believe effective library technology depends upon important reflection using the stages in the SAMR model.
